Revisar y describir aspectos importantes de la literatura científica sobre la microbiota de la glándula mamaria. Se revisaron las bases de datos de revistas científicas.
En sus primeros días de vida, los recién nacidos son rápidamente colonizados por diferentes bacterias, a las que se les atribuye la iniciación de un poderoso sistema de defensa. Se cree que dichas bacterias garantizan un buen desarrollo físico e inmunológico.
La leche materna es uno de los factores que permite la colonización temprana, la cual confiere un sinnúmero de beneficios y tiene un impacto en la salud infantil y en la modulación de determinadas enfermedades a largo plazo.
La forma como las diferentes bacterias colonizan el intestino neonatal formando su propia microbiota, es debatida. Se asume que es multifactorial y que está influenciada por la vía del parto y la lactancia, que determinan una microbiota sana o una alterada de la cual se derivan diferentes enfermedades.
La microbiota de la glándula mamaria es única y son múltiples los factores que convergen para su conformación; con su adecuado establecimiento se generan factores protectores para la vida futura. La administración oral de probióticos derivados de la leche materna, abre la puerta para entender una nueva forma de colonización más eficiente de la microbiota del neonato. Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17939, Bifidobacterium longum y Lactobacillus fermentum CECT 5716, fueron aislados de la leche materna de mujeres sanas y varios estudios confirman que pueden utilizarse en la nutrición humana.
