Main Article Content
Abstract
Introduction: Depression is a worldwide disease; it is estimated that it affects more than 300 million people regardless of age, gender, or socioeconomic status. The prevalence of depressive symptoms in children can vary from one country to another and depends on several factors independent of the area or region to be evaluated; these figures range from 1.4% to 11.7%.
Methodology: The prevalence of depressive symptoms was evaluated in children and adolescents between the ages of 7 and 16 who were hospitalized in the pediatric service of the E.S.E Hospital Departamental Universitario del Quindío, San Juan de Dios, regardless of their hospitalization diagnosis through a cross-sectional study in which a sociodemographic survey was carried out on the caregiver and subsequently a CDI scale (Childhood Depression Questionnaire) on the participating child.
Results:Using the CDI scale and based on a score greater than or equal to 12 points, positivity was obtained in 39.1% of the population. According to the CDI scale, some symptoms of depression with values between 12 and 18 points, 24.3%, this being the group with the highest prevalence, indicating the proportion in our child population with mild symptoms. The group with a score greater than 19 classified as moderate and severe depressive symptoms represented 14.8%.
Conclusion: The prevalence of depressive symptoms in children is higher compared to the literature found, generating alarming data for our country.
