Abstract
Introduction: During confinement secondary to the COVID-19 pandemic, emotional disturbances have occurred in children and adolescents.
Objective: To determine the prevalence of depressive symptoms in children and adolescents at a Hospital in Tlaxcala during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out at the General Hospital of Subzone with Family Medicine No. 8 in Tlaxcala., selecting in a systematic probabilistic way eligible children and adolescents between 8 and 18 years of age from the third grade to the third grade of high school, to whom the Beck inventory was applied, establishing as variables: age, sex, school grade, family typology, confinement time and the presence of depressive symptoms. The results were analyzed with frequencies, percentages, mean, and standard deviation.
Results: 134 students participated, 14.2% children and 85.8% adolescents, 53.7% women and 46.3% men with 13.4 ± 3.1 years of age. 44% did not present depression data, 56% presented depressive symptoms, 29.1% had mild depression, 22.4% had moderate depression, and 4.5% had severe depression. Presenting depression was 28.4% of adolescents (mild), 17.2% of females, 14.9% with nuclear family typology with brothers, and 29.1% of high school students.
Conclusion: According to the results of the Beck scale, 3 out of 10 children/adolescents present mild depression and 2 out of 10 moderate depression. Depression occurred more frequently in high school adolescents, in females, and in nuclear families with brothers.
