Objectives

Ultrasonography is a fast, painless and noninvasive test that has been considered a useful diagnostic tool in adult emergency services and recently in pediatric emergency services. In recent years it has become known to be useful in pediatric emergencies, however, there is little published literature in Spanish. Through this article we try to do a literature approach regarding the use of ultrasound as a diagnostic tool in pediatric emergency services as its usefulness is a subject of necessary revision for medical staff.

Methods

We conducted a research of the literature through the implementation of MeSH terms in the PubMed database. As search terms pediatrics AND emergency medicine AND ultrasonography were defined. Articles published from 1972 through July, 2015, were included. No other filters such as language, sex or type of study were used.

Results

In total, 154 publications were obtained; 88 were excluded because they were not relevant to this review. Finally, 66 publications were analysed.

Conclusions

Ultrasound applications are wide and i
