Persistent cholestasis due to hepatitis A virus in children. Case report.

Abstract
Introduction: Hepatitis due to the hepatitis A virus is usually self-limiting in 90% of cases, but it can have atypical manifestations such as persistent cholestasis (up to 15%, according to some references). Not considering that concept leads to more significant morbidity from unnecessary examinations and treatments. Objective: To present the first pediatric case of this atypical clinical form of hepatitis A in the Latin American medical literature to raise awareness of its diagnosis and treatment. Case report: 13-year-old with cholestasis onset 23 days after the beginning of hepatitis A symptoms (4 weeks), improving symptomatically after a few days, without specific treatment, and normalization at four months (16 weeks). Conclusions: The usual course of hepatitis A infection is a rapid and anicteric disease, a cholestatic form can occur for up to 8 weeks in many cases, and only longer times are considered unusual. It is recommended to follow all cases at least two weeks after the resolution of symptoms. The treatment of choice is a short course of prednisolone.
