Abstract

Background: Enteroviruses are the main causes of infectious meningitis in children. The differentiation between bacterial and viral meningitis by clinical and laboratory findings may be inaccurate.
Case summary: We describe thirteen cases of children admitted to our hospital with a clinical picture of meningitis and in which enterovirus were detected in cerebrospinal fluid through molecular techniques.
Conclusions Through methods such as molecular detection of enterovirus in cerebrospinal fluid, one can obtain a diagnosis of viral meningitis quickly, reducing the use of antibiotics and hospital stay.
